INTRODUCTION E scherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 (EcN) has come a long way since it was first described. In 1917, during World War I, the German physiologist, microbiologist and physician Alfred Nissle (1874–1965) isolated a particular E. coli strain that appeared to provide some protection against the intestinal disorders that were highly prevalent in southeastern Europe at that time. Subsequent observations by Nissle, which included self-experiments, convinced him that there were no harmful side effects associated with this “antagonistically strong E. coli strain.” Therefore he began to fill gelatine capsules with bacteria that he had INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH, SERIES #60
